To Serve

  1. A reference to any calling within the church.

Since almost all positions within the Church are unpaid, a large majority of the members must serve as volunteers in some capacity as part of their religious duties. Most of these callings do not require a great deal of time. Often you will hear members talk about what position they serve in or ask which calling(s) you have. Another way this terminology is used is as a reference to missionary work, which is also a calling. You will commonly hear people ask "Where did you serve?" or say "I served in (insert geographical area)." What they really mean by this is where did you serve your mission and I served my mission in (insert geographical area).
