Sealing

  1. A Temple ordinance in which two people are married for eternity.
  2. A Temple ordinance in which a couple or family is bound together for eternity.

LDS doctrine holds that the family is the most important social unit that exists. Because of this, it is important that we do all we can to keep this structure stable, peaceful, and loving. The basic meaning of a sealing is that the couple's marriage and family structure will be kept for all times, even after death. Sealings are also performed on the deceased by faithful members of the LDS church. This, and other rituals (Baptism, Gift of the Holy Ghost) are performed on behalf of the dead to give them options in the next life. Though a person's choices impact their eternal development, their relationship with God, and eligibility for blessings you cannot force anyone to follow a particular path. Freedom of individual choice is a central tenet of the LDS church and as such it cannot be stressed enough that these efforts are meant to provide the deceased with options.
